GIS technology is playing an increasing role in the election process in Columbia County. GIS is being used to maintain and update County Supervisory, local Aldermanic, and voting wards maps using data from numerous sources including the US Census Bureau, the State of Wisconsin, and the LID.
City, Village and Town government is also taking advantage of GIS to support the election process:
- GIS has been used for redistricting to ensure fairer representation.
- As part of voter registration, GIS or maps generated from GIS can and are being used for address validation and to confirm that voters are eligible to vote in local elections.
- During the election many clerk's offices use GIS or maps generated from GIS to assist voters in finding their polling place as well as providing them travel directions from their house to the poll.
