Abstract:
The roads coverage was created to represent highways, roads, bridges, and other features associated with transportation in Columbia County. The transportation features were derived from the April 1995 flight with a flight height of 10,000 feet, the April 2002 flight with a flight height was 10,000', a vehicle mounted 1-5 meter GPS unit, and other legal documents (Certified Surveys, Plats of Survey, etc.). The burden for determining 'fitness for use' rests entirely upon the requestor. Columbia County and its co-producers will not be liable in any way for accuracy of the data, and assume no responsibility whatsoever for direct, indirect, special, consequential, exemplary or other damages. |

Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

Transportation data provides consultants, planners, resource managers and other county staff with information on the location of pavement centerlines within Columbia County. The information contained in this coverage is one of Wisconsin Land Information Program's foundational elements and supports the county's goals and objectives relating to land information as well as the county's information technology vision, mission, goals, strategies and plan.

Attribute accuracy is tested by digital comparison of the source data with display of the digital data attributes and the 1995 and 2002 Digital Orthophotos. Road names area verified with the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation Municipality Road Index Plats as submited by local officials or other documents of public records as appropriate. The Columbia County Land Information Office Geospatial Technologies Section checked 100% of the data for attribute accuracy.
This data set is topological structured for arcs for the entire Columbia County area. The geographic data represented by this coverage is stored according to a vector based data type. With a vector data structure, geographic entities are represented as point, lines, and areas depicted on a 2-dimensional surface. Each point is identified by a single x-y location; lines are identified by a sequence of x-y coordinates.
The features represented in this data set are, to the best knowledge of the Columbia County Land Information Office, representative of all administrative boundaries of this type represented in Columbia County. Data is updated continually using documents recorded with the Columbia County Register of Deeds.
Accuracy of this digital data is dependent upon the scale, date, and origin of the source material used to create this geographic data set.

The current transportation coverage that is maintained by the Columbia County Land Information Office Geospatial Technologies Section was provided to the County from Ayres Associates. It was derived from the 1995 Digital Orthophotos flown at a height of 10,000 feet. Ayres Associates made revisions to the geometry of the coverage from a data quality check that was done by the Land Information Office Geospatial Technologies Section. Errors were documented in the feature geometry and/or data attributes. From 2000 to 2001 road geometry was updated using information from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation "Gas Tax" maps and sheets. It is assumed that all town roads currently in a given town are listed on these "Gas Tax" documents. The "Gas Tax" information provided an accurate listing of all the public roads in each township, including road names and distances. From this data, the geometry was updated, including the placement of missing roads throughout the county. Road naming attributes were updated and enhanced in 2000 - 2002, by using the road names listed on the "Gas Tax" maps and sheets. Original road naming attributes were created by first using the US Census Bureau TIGER/Line Files. The TIGER/Line File Road Names were used to create the Columbia County Rural Address/Fire Number Maps which are maintained by the Planning & Zoning Office. The Rural Address/Fire Number Maps were then quality checked by the City, Village, and Town Governing Boards in Columbia County who used their local knowledge and site checks to verify road names. Modifications were then made to the Rural Address/Fire Number Maps road names. These corrected road names were then used in the ROADS coverage. Additions to the road centerline file are added from Plat of Survey maps filed in the Columbia County Register of Deeds Office, the 2002 Digital Orthophotography, and WisDOT Road Index Plat Maps and Sheets, provided by the local municipalities.

Used to identify if a road centerline should be replaced with the 2002 Orthophotography derived centerlines. A value of "N" represents that the existing road either has been replaced or was examined and determined to not to need replacement with the 2002 lines. A value of "Y" means that the road centerline needs to be adjusted or replaced based on the 2002 orthophotography derive lines. The field is being used during the QC process between the 2002 ortho derived lines and the existing centerlines.
