If you are using this communication portal because you have been charged with a crime and desire to communicate with the District Attorney’s Office regarding the case against you, you must know that you have the constitutional right to be represented by an attorney.  If you are represented by an attorney or wish to be represented by an attorney, do not use this communication portal.

An attorney could assist you by negotiating on your behalf or identifying legal procedures (that you may not know about) to use on your behalf.  An attorney could answer any legal questions you may have and give you advice on how to best proceed.  The Columbia County District Attorney’s office cannot answer questions for you or provide you with advice.

If you wish to be represented by an attorney, but cannot afford one, there are ways that an attorney to be appointed to represent you.  For example, you could contact the Portage Office of the State Public Defender by phone at (608) 742-1150 or in person at 2520 West Wisconsin Street, Suite 105, Portage, WI 53901 .  If the Public Defender’s Office determined that they could not appoint an attorney for you, the Circuit Court Judge has additional authority to appoint an attorney to represent you.  If you wish to hire an attorney on your own, a directory of licensed attorneys can be found at www.wisbar.org.  Finally, you have a constitutional right to represent yourself if you so choose.
