Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride Varnish Program

Fluoride varnish application is a primary prevention strategy that reduces the risk of cavities. The goal of the fluoride varnish program is to improve the oral health of Columbia County residents 6 months through 12 years of age by increasing access to fluoride protection, dental education and follow-up on oral health care as needed.

What is Fluoride Varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a gel that has a high concentration of fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel which helps teeth not decay. Fluoride can be found in toothpaste and is added in some city water supplies. Fluoride varnish is a gel/paste that is applied to the teeth and then hardens on the teeth. As it hardens fluoride is released into the enamel of the teeth helping to prevent decay. This added protection can be very beneficial!
