General Information on the Sale of Foreclosure Property:
The County Treasurer conducts a sale of tax delinquent foreclosure properties once a year. Land sales are published in the Portage Daily Register and various other local newspapers within the County and also on the County’s website.
The foreclosure properties are sold by sealed bid to the highest bidder, however the County reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids. All bids must be submitted in a sealed envelope, clearly marked "Bid on Land Sale" and postmarked or delivered to the County Treasurer by the date specified in the Land Sale Notice. Bids must be at least the minimum appraised value of the parcel, which is also listed in the Land Sale Notice. A certified check or money order equal to ten (10%) percent of the amount of the bid, must accompany the bid as earnest money, which would be applied to the purchase price offered by the successful bidder. In the case of rejected bids, the earnest money will be returned to the bidder. The successful bidder must make full payment of the balance of the purchase price to the Columbia County Treasurer within thirty (30) days of receiving the Notice of Acceptance sent by the County. After receiving full payment of the balance of the bid, the County will issue a quitclaim deed to the successful bidder.
